Irish News Headlines: Trump, Dubai Returns & Bullying Concerns – Friday’s Papers

President Donald Trump has asserted he must have a role in selecting Iran’s next leader, a demand made as the conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States enters its seventh day. The statement, delivered Friday, adds another layer of complexity to the escalating crisis, according to reports from CBS News.

Trump also characterized the son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as “unacceptable,” without elaborating on the reasoning behind the assessment. This intervention comes as the conflict expands geographically, with new Israeli strikes reported in Lebanon and Tehran, and Iranian drones targeting neighboring Azerbaijan for the first time.

The United States’ Gulf allies are facing a critical shortage of interceptors needed to defend against Iranian missiles and drones, CBS News reported, citing sources within the U.S. Government. Iran, in turn, has threatened “more intense and widespread” attacks aimed at crippling the region’s economy, mirroring escalatory rhetoric from U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

In London, police arrested four men – one Iranian national and three dual British-Iranian nationals – on suspicion of spying on the Jewish community and aiding Iran. Six additional men were arrested in Harrow, west London, on suspicion of assisting the alleged spies. The Metropolitan Police stated the arrests occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Friday, with searches ongoing at multiple properties.

The developments follow a large-scale offensive launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, following weeks of military buildup and threats from Trump. Confirmed reports indicate that Israeli Defense Force (IDF) strikes in Tehran resulted in the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. U.S. Strikes targeted military sites in Isfahan, Karaj, Kermanshah, Qum, and Tabriz.

Iran retaliated with ballistic missile attacks on Israel, and U.S. Facilities across the Middle East, including in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The U.S. State Department has urged American citizens to leave the Middle East immediately.

According to a report from Axios, last Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed President Trump of intelligence regarding Iran’s supreme leader and top officials. This communication is believed to have been a key factor in the decision to launch the recent attacks.

CNN reported earlier this week that Trump stated the “huge wave” of the U.S. Attack on Iran was still to come, outlining objectives to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, annihilate its navy, end its nuclear ambitions, and halt its support for militant groups. Trump also expressed surprise at Iran’s attacks against Arab countries in the region.

The conflict began after a period of escalating tensions, with the U.S. And Israel expressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and regional activities. Attempts to reach a diplomatic resolution before the strikes were unsuccessful, with a U.S. Envoy stating it was “impossible” to secure a deal prior to the military action.
