Severe weather swept through Oklahoma on Thursday night, tragically claiming the lives of a mother and her 13-year-old daughter in Major County. The deaths occurred as a powerful storm system brought the threat of tornadoes to the region, and more intense weather is forecast for Friday and the weekend, impacting millions across the Plains and Midwest.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt confirmed the fatalities in a statement released Friday, expressing his condolences to the family and those affected by the storms. “Severe weather struck Major County last night and tragically claimed the lives of a mother and daughter,” Stitt said. “I am praying for the family as they grieve this tragic loss, as well as all those impacted by the storms.” The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported the victims were found in a vehicle near the intersection of State Highway 60 and County Road 2340 around 10 p.m. Thursday, and the crash “appears to be tornado related,” according to spokesperson Sarah Stewart.
The National Weather Service (NWS) is investigating whether Thursday night’s storms were, in fact, tornadoes. A damage survey crew was dispatched Friday to assess the extent of the damage in Major County, according to meteorologist Ryan Bunker. The storms that struck were among the first outbreaks of severe weather as the spring storm season begins.
Severe Weather Threat Expands
The immediate threat has expanded, with more than 7 million Americans now at the highest risk of severe weather, including major metropolitan areas like Kansas City, Missouri. Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Omaha, Nebraska. An additional nearly 25 million people are facing a slightly lesser risk, encompassing cities such as Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, according to the Storm Prediction Center. The NWS warns of scattered thunderstorms expected Friday afternoon and evening across the Plains states, the Ozarks, and the Midwest.
Video footage captured by a deputy’s car near Fairview, Oklahoma, showed a dramatic view of a possible funnel cloud reaching the ground Thursday night. The Fairview Emergency Management department shared video on social media of a large possible tornado just west of the city.
According to FOX Weather, a tornado-warned storm moved through Fairview around 8:40 p.m. Local time Thursday. The NWS detected a tornado debris signature near Helena in neighboring Alfalfa County. The state’s office of emergency management is in contact with county emergency managers and damage assessments are underway.
Victims Identified, Investigation Ongoing
The victims have been identified as a 47-year-old woman and her 13-year-old daughter, both from Fairview, Oklahoma. According to a report by Yahoo News, the woman was on the phone when the connection was lost, prompting a missing person report before the vehicle was located. The investigation into the cause of their deaths is ongoing.
Governor Stitt also issued a warning about more extreme weather expected across Oklahoma this weekend. “More weather risks are expected across Oklahoma this weekend,” Stitt wrote on Facebook. “Please stay weather aware and follow guidance from local officials to keep your family safe.”
The FOX Forecast Center anticipates an outbreak of severe storms across the Southern Plains beginning Friday afternoon, with two primary areas of concern. The first round of storms is expected to develop near the surface low across Kansas and the Missouri Valley, bringing the threat of “monster hail” and tornadoes.
Authorities are urging residents in affected areas to stay informed about weather updates, have a plan in place, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
As the region braces for further severe weather, officials are continuing to assess the damage from Thursday’s storms and provide support to those impacted by this tragic event. The focus remains on ensuring public safety and preparedness as the threat of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms persists.
What comes next is continued monitoring of the developing storm systems and rapid dissemination of warnings to the public. Damage assessments will continue, and support will be provided to the families affected by this tragedy.
