Nscale Raises $2B: Europe’s Largest Series C & AI Infrastructure Race

Nscale, a UK-based hyperscaler focused on AI infrastructure, has closed a $2 billion Series C funding round, bringing its valuation to $14.6 billion. The rapid ascent of the company, founded in 2024, reflects the intense demand for GPU compute power and the critical need for scalable infrastructure to support the burgeoning artificial intelligence market. This latest funding round positions Nscale as a major player in the race to provide the foundational hardware for the next generation of AI applications.

The investment, announced today, was led jointly by Aker ASA, a Norwegian industrial conglomerate and 8090 Industries, a Dallas-based industrial technology fund. Nscale has now raised over $4.5 billion in equity funding in less than six months, a remarkable pace for a company so young. The influx of capital will be used to accelerate the deployment of its data centers, expand its engineering and operations teams, and further develop its vertically integrated platform.

Nscale’s core proposition centers on providing a complete AI infrastructure stack – encompassing GPU compute, networking, data services, and orchestration software – delivered from its own and colocated data centers across Europe, North America, and Asia. The company argues that the primary constraint in the AI economy isn’t a lack of demand, but rather the ability to reliably and efficiently deploy the necessary compute capacity at scale. Nscale differentiates itself by designing its data centers specifically for GPU-dense workloads, rather than adapting existing facilities built for traditional cloud computing.

Strategic Partnerships and Expansion

Since securing a $1.1 billion Series B round in September 2025, Nscale has moved quickly to solidify its position. In February 2026, the company announced a $1.4 billion delayed-draw term loan backed by GPUs. Crucially, Nscale has also secured significant contracts, notably a large-scale agreement with Microsoft to build a facility in Texas equipped with 104,000 NVIDIA GB300 GPUs. This partnership underscores the growing demand for specialized AI infrastructure from major cloud providers. CNBC reported on Nvidia’s backing of Nscale and its valuation.

Nscale’s geographic footprint is expanding rapidly, with data centers planned or already operational in Norway, the UK, Portugal, Iceland, and the US. The company’s Norwegian presence is anchored by sites in Glomfjord and Narvik, and It’s also involved in the Stargate Norway project, a collaboration with Aker and OpenAI targeting 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by the end of 2026.

Governance and Board Appointments

Alongside the funding, Nscale has streamlined its structure by integrating the Aker–Nscale joint venture, established in July 2025, into a wholly owned entity. Aker remains a leading shareholder, and its CEO, Øyvind Eriksen, will continue to serve on the board. According to a company statement, this consolidation aims to improve execution and governance. “This step strengthens execution by putting delivery and governance under one roof, while keeping continuity for the people and projects already underway,” Eriksen said.

The company has also announced the appointment of three new board members: Sheryl Sandberg, former Meta COO and co-founder of Sandberg Bernthal Venture Partners; Susan Decker, former president of Yahoo and lead director of Berkshire Hathaway; and Nick Clegg, former UK Deputy Prime Minister and current General Partner at Hiro Capital. These appointments bring a wealth of experience in operations, finance, and regulatory affairs to Nscale’s leadership team. Clegg’s background in European politics could prove particularly valuable as Nscale navigates sovereign AI initiatives and government contracts.

Looking Ahead: IPO and Market Challenges

Nscale’s CEO, Josh Payne, has previously indicated the company’s ambition to pursue an initial public offering (IPO) as early as 2026. However, the success of such a move will depend on continued growth in the AI compute market and Nscale’s ability to demonstrate its operational capabilities. Building and scaling the complex infrastructure required to meet the demands of AI is a significant undertaking, and delays are common in large-scale projects. The company’s ability to translate its substantial funding into tangible assets and deliver on its promises will be critical to its long-term success.

The rapid pace of fundraising – over $4.5 billion since September 2025 – highlights the intense investor interest in AI infrastructure. However, it also creates pressure to deploy capital effectively and demonstrate a clear path to profitability. Nscale’s focus on vertically integrated infrastructure and its strategic partnerships position it well to capitalize on the growing demand for AI compute, but execution will be paramount. The company’s next steps will be closely watched by investors and industry observers alike.
