One Piece Season 2: Stellar Reviews & 100% Rotten Tomatoes Score

The second season of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of “One Piece” has arrived, and critics are overwhelmingly positive. A stark contrast to the more mixed reception of its first outing in 2023, the new episodes are earning praise for their ambitious scope, strong performances, and faithful adaptation of the beloved manga series. The show, following Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew in their quest for the ultimate treasure, is quickly becoming a standout success for the streaming platform.

Launched this morning, Season 2 has already garnered a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 16 reviews – a significant jump from the 86% achieved by Season 1. The show also boasts a strong 85/100 score on Metacritic, placing it among highly-rated returning series like “Shogun,” “Severance,” and HBO’s “Watchmen.”

Much of the acclaim centers on the cast, particularly Iñaki Godoy’s portrayal of Luffy, as well as the show’s improved production values and emotional depth. Even as some critics note the series’ occasionally varying tone as a potential sticking point, the overall consensus is that “One Piece” has successfully captured the spirit of Eiichiro Oda’s original work.

“The best thing about One Piece remains the fact that it’s boldly, unashamedly bizarre. It looks and plays out like nothing else, and is a rich bounty of moments that never cease to surprise and thrill in both their novelty and underlying construction,” wrote Jonathan Wilson of Ready Steady Cut.

Elijah Gonzalez of The AV Club echoed this sentiment, stating, “Owens, Tracz, and the writers continue to capture the secret sauce of this work, one where literal cartoon characters are regularly granted unexpected depth. That these more serious moments can sit next to Seussian silliness without inducing total tonal whiplash is a major accomplishment. This adaptation continues to demonstrate why so many are willing to follow its central rubber-limbed weirdo across the seven seas and beyond.”

A “Miracle” Adaptation

Rafael Motomayor of IGN went even further, calling Season 2 “nothing short of a miracle,” praising its ability to capture the “absurd and cartoony world” of the manga while maintaining a sense of fun. He highlighted the “grand production design, exquisite costuming, and stunning VFX work” as key components of the season’s success. David Caballero of Screen Rant declared that “One Piece has everything going for it to become one of Netflix’s all-time best originals, and this new season is proof.”

Alison Mattingly of Nerdist noted a clear improvement in the show’s scale and ambition, stating, “Thankfully, One Piece season two emphatically puts those concerns [about budget limitations] to rest with a phenomenal display of what this show is capable of.”

Critics also lauded the show’s commitment to its source material. Steven Scalfe of Slant Magazine observed that the series “continues to embrace theatricality and artifice on a grand scale, and it’s even more joyously assured than ever… Yet even as the oddities multiply, One Piece is admirably committed to practical effects… [it] remains a bottomless fount of imagination.”

Ensemble Cast and Campy Appeal

The strength of the ensemble cast was also frequently mentioned. Clint Worthington of RogerEbert.com described the show as “goofy, knowingly strange, and wears its heart on its sentimental sleeve,” drawing comparisons to campy, swashbuckling adventure shows like “Xena: Warrior Princess.” Lyvie Scott of TV Guide noted that the “narrative growing pains that plagued One Piece’s first season have since been ironed out,” attributing the show’s success to its “emotional core.”

David Ople of Games Radar proclaimed, “This is the live-action adaptation that longtime fans deserve.”

All eight episodes of Season 2 are currently available for streaming on Netflix.

As “One Piece” continues to gain momentum, fans are eagerly anticipating what the future holds for Luffy and his crew. With the overwhelmingly positive response to Season 2, the series is poised to become a flagship title for Netflix, and discussions about a potential third season are already underway.
