Cork’s The South Gate Bar to Reopen Before St. Patrick’s Day

Cork City’s vibrant nightlife is set for a boost with the highly anticipated reopening of a landmark pub complex. Formerly known as the Flying Enterprise and Courtyard, the venue has undergone a significant refurbishment and will now operate under a new name: The South Gate. The transformation, backed by a €5 million investment, aims to deliver an expanded entertainment and dining experience just in time for the St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

The South Gate is scheduled to open its doors this Thursday, offering a fresh take on a beloved Cork institution. The new owners, Sengfund Investment Limited, are a local buyer with international backing, and also own the Royal Palace Chinese Restaurant, Pearl River, and Nosh 19 restaurants in the city. They’ve teased a grand opening filled with “cold pints, great food, and good vibes,” signaling a commitment to maintaining the lively atmosphere the Flying Enterprise was known for.

The rebranding to The South Gate pays homage to the historic South Gate Bridge, a landmark that has “connected people entering the city for over 300 years,” according to the new owners. This renaming reflects a desire to build on the venue’s legacy whereas embracing a new chapter. The complex, which spans virtually an entire quayside block of a quarter of an acre, has been a fixture in Cork for 45 years, evolving from a traditional bar into a multi-faceted entertainment destination.

The sale of the Flying Enterprise complex last November marked one of the largest ever in Cork City, exceeding €5 million. The previous owners, Finbarr and Dolly O’Shea, had significantly expanded the premises since taking over in 1980, adding apartments and the Quay News shop, deli, and off-licence. Their vision included transforming the former Christian Brothers’ schoolyard into an award-winning outdoor venue, which earned the title of best outdoor pub space at the Irish Pub Awards in 2019, as reported by EchoLive.

A Legacy of Expansion and Innovation

The O’Shea’s tenure saw the Flying Enterprise evolve into a cornerstone of Cork’s social scene. The complex’s expansion included the Courtyard Bar, capable of hosting events for up to 700 people at the site of the old Sullivans Quay CBS. The school itself closed in 2006 after 180 years due to a declining city centre population. The Flying Enterprise lounge and restaurant also received recognition, earning an award from the Better Building Awards Pub Frontage in 2010.

The new operations manager, Paul O’Dea, and Head Chef Nicolás Alegre are leading the final preparations for the reopening. The team is focused on delivering a seamless transition and building upon the foundation laid by the O’Shea family. The South Gate aims to become a central hub for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and beyond, offering a diverse range of entertainment options.

What to Expect at The South Gate

While specific details about the entertainment lineup and menu are still emerging, the owners have promised an enhanced experience for patrons. The expanded premises will allow for a greater variety of events and a more comfortable atmosphere. The reopening coincides with the annual Cork St. Patrick’s Festival, which runs from March 13th to 17th, 2026, culminating in the city’s parade on March 17th at 1:00 pm, themed “Marsh, Myth & Magic.”

The South Gate’s reopening represents a significant investment in Cork’s hospitality sector and a renewed commitment to providing a vibrant social space for locals and tourists alike. The new owners are hoping to build on the success of the Flying Enterprise and establish The South Gate as a premier destination in the city.

As The South Gate prepares to welcome its first patrons this Thursday at noon, all eyes are on how this reimagined venue will shape the future of Cork’s nightlife. The success of this venture will likely influence further investment and development in the area, solidifying Cork’s reputation as a dynamic and welcoming city.
