Switzerland Bus Fire: Multiple Dead & Injured in Kerzers

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

Kerzers, Switzerland – A bus fire in the Swiss town of Kerzers has resulted in at least six fatalities and five injuries, prompting a criminal investigation into possible arson. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, around 6:25 PM local time, as the postal bus was traveling from Düdingen to Kerzers, approximately 12 miles west of Bern, the capital city.

The blaze, which completely engulfed the vehicle, prompted a large-scale emergency response, including multiple ambulances and a helicopter, according to reports from Swiss media. Three of the injured were transported to hospitals with severe injuries, and a rescuer was also among those hurt, the BBC reported. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.

Investigation Focuses on Possible Arson

Police are investigating the possibility that the fire was deliberately set. According to local outlet Blick, authorities received information suggesting a person on board doused themselves in gasoline. Yet, police have stated they cannot yet confirm this claim. “We have information that a person was the cause of the fire. However, we cannot confirm this,” a police spokesperson said, adding that It’s unclear whether there is any danger to the public, as reported by the Independent. A criminal investigation has been opened to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy, CBS News reported.

Footage from the scene shows the bus reduced to a charred shell after firefighters extinguished the flames. The incident took place in the center of Kerzers, also known in French as Chiètres, in the Fribourg canton. The bus is operated by PostBus, affiliated with the national postal service.

Regional Impact and Ongoing Investigation

The incident has shocked the small Swiss town and prompted an outpouring of concern. Authorities have requested that anyone with information about the incident come forward. The investigation is expected to continue throughout the night, according to police statements. The cause of the fire remains unconfirmed, and authorities are working to determine whether the incident constitutes a terrorist act, though they stated they could not comment further at this stage of the investigation, The Guardian reported.

The Fribourg canton, where Kerzers is located, is a bilingual region with a mix of French and German-speaking communities. The incident is likely to raise questions about safety protocols on public transportation and the potential for deliberate acts of violence.

What comes next is a thorough investigation by Swiss authorities to determine the cause of the fire and to identify those responsible, if it is determined to be arson. The focus will be on gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing the wreckage. The results of the investigation will likely have implications for transportation safety regulations and security measures in Switzerland.
