Fremont Named Happiest City in America: See California’s Rankings

Fremont, California, has been named the happiest city in the United States, according to a recent report released by WalletHub. The city topped the list of 182 large cities analyzed, earning an overall happiness score of 74.09. This marks the second consecutive year Fremont has claimed the top spot, solidifying its position as a leader in American well-being.

The ranking, released on March 11, 2026, considered 29 key indicators across three core dimensions: emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community, and environment. Whereas financial stability plays a role, researchers emphasize that happiness is multifaceted, encompassing factors like social support, mental health, and overall life satisfaction.

Fremont’s success is largely attributed to its strong economic standing and positive community factors. Nearly 80% of households in Fremont earn over $75,000 annually, the highest percentage of any city in the study. Residents also report high levels of life satisfaction, with the city ranking seventh lowest in rates of depression and fifth highest in life expectancy, according to WalletHub’s analysis.

Key Factors Contributing to Fremont’s Happiness

Beyond economic prosperity, Fremont distinguishes itself with a remarkably stable family structure. The city boasts the lowest separation and divorce rate in the nation, at just 9.3%. WalletHub also found that Fremont residents prioritize their psychological well-being, reporting the lowest share of adults experiencing 14 or more mentally unhealthy days per month. This sense of community and care for one another further boosts overall happiness levels, with Fremont ranking fifth among the most caring cities in America.

“Fremont, CA, is the happiest city in America, and one contributing factor is that the city has the highest share of households with an income above $75,000,” said WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo in a press release. He added that Fremont residents report the highest rate of life satisfaction and the fifth-highest average life expectancy in the U.S.

California Dominates the Top Rankings

Fremont isn’t the only California city celebrating. The Golden State dominated the WalletHub rankings, with Irvine (#8, 67.99), San Jose (#10, 67.79), and San Francisco (#17, 64.99) all securing spots in the top 20. San Diego (#21, 64.25) and Huntington Beach (#25, 62.80) also made the top 25. Other California cities appearing in the top 50 include Chula Vista (#30, 61.31), Santa Clarita (#40, 60.28), and Oakland (#52, 59.03). A full list of California cities and their scores can be found here.

However, the report acknowledges a significant challenge facing many of these thriving cities: the high cost of living. In Fremont, the cost of living is 64% higher than the national average, with housing costs a staggering 126% above the national average. The average home value in Fremont currently stands at $1,477,693, according to Zillow.

Beyond Income: The Components of Happiness

WalletHub’s methodology highlights the importance of considering factors beyond income when evaluating quality of life. The study analyzed metrics such as depression rates, income growth, and average daily leisure time to create a comprehensive picture of happiness. Researchers found that while income is a factor, earning more than $75,000 annually does not necessarily equate to increased happiness. The ideal city, according to the report, fosters conditions that promote both mental and physical health, including reasonable work hours, short commutes, and a strong sense of community.

WalletHub previously identified Fremont as the happiest city to live in 2025 and named it the best place to raise a family in May, citing a median family income near $130,000 and a low rate of families living in poverty.

As Fremont continues to attract residents and businesses, the city will likely face ongoing challenges related to affordability and maintaining its high quality of life. However, its current standing as the happiest city in America suggests a strong foundation for continued success. The coming months will reveal how Fremont addresses these challenges and sustains its position as a beacon of well-being.
