NIU Alum Wins Golden Apple Award for Music Education Excellence

South Beloit, IL – Hayley Gotzsche, a 2015 graduate of Northern Illinois University’s School of Music, has been honored with the prestigious Golden Apple Award for her exceptional function as a music and theater educator at Willowbrook Middle School. The award recognizes teachers who demonstrate excellence in K-12 education within Boone and Winnebago Counties. Gotzsche’s dedication extends beyond the classroom, fostering a vibrant arts program and a safe, supportive environment for her students.

The Golden Apple Foundation annually selects five winners from a pool of 20 nominees, celebrating educators who significantly impact their students and communities. For Gotzsche, the recognition is particularly meaningful, echoing the influence of her own inspiring music teacher, Linda Julian, who also received a Golden Apple Award in 2017 – in the very same classroom. This full-circle moment was made even more special as Julian, now a member of Golden Apple’s Teacher Academy, presented Gotzsche with the award alongside her husband, Rasmus, and daughter, Dahlia.

Gotzsche’s passion for music began at a young age. “I’ve always loved music,” she said, “Music has always been a source of joy and an expression of confidence. It was just natural to go into it. I love to get to bring those experiences to other kids as well.” This passion translates into a diverse range of opportunities for Willowbrook students, including the spring musical, a seasonal caroling ensemble, solo and little ensemble performances, Broadway Club, and participation in the Music in the Parks competition, as detailed on the Golden Apple Foundation website.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Julian’s impact on Gotzsche’s life extends beyond her initial inspiration to become a teacher. After Julian’s retirement seven years ago, Gotzsche returned to Willowbrook Middle School, taking her place as the school’s sole music educator. “I had a great music teacher growing up,” Gotzsche explained. “She really had a way to make me feel very good about myself, and about my ability to sing.” The opportunity to now be recognized alongside her mentor is a testament to the enduring power of positive educational experiences.

Dr. Mary Lynn Doherty, assistant director of the NIU School of Music, professor, and coordinator of music education, wasn’t surprised by Gotzsche’s achievement. “Hayley was always a standout,” Doherty said. “I could tell that Hayley was going to be one of those teachers where the teaching of the music was going to be really strong and significant, but I saw that she would be one who would be there for students, be a role model, and show them how much a teacher can impact their life.”

Beyond the Curriculum: A Multifaceted Role

Gotzsche’s commitment to Willowbrook extends far beyond traditional music instruction. She currently directs the fifth grade choir, leads the sixth through eighth grade theater program, oversees the annual spring musicals, organizes a haunted house fundraiser for the school’s “Pet Patrol” project, and manages the Wolverine Carolers’ holiday performances. Most recently, she launched a Broadway Club at the school, demonstrating her dedication to providing diverse artistic outlets for her students. NIU Today highlights the breadth of her involvement.

“I feel like I’m one of the lucky ones every day,” Gotzsche said. “I love to teach. It feels very affirming from the community that I’m doing a good job. It means a lot to me.”

Gotzsche’s success story underscores the importance of dedicated educators and the lasting impact they have on their students. As she continues to inspire young musicians and performers at Willowbrook Middle School, her commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching learning environment serves as a model for educators throughout the region. The Golden Apple Foundation’s Facebook page celebrated Gotzsche as their first award recipient of the day.

What comes next for Gotzsche and Willowbrook’s arts program remains to be seen, but her Golden Apple Award undoubtedly provides a strong foundation for continued growth and success. We encourage readers to share their own stories of inspiring teachers in the comments below.
