CMA CGM: Ships Blocked in Gulf – Safety & Rerouting Efforts

DUBAI, UAE – Global shipping giant CMA CGM is rerouting vessels and implementing contingency plans as tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global trade. The company confirmed that 14 of its ships, carrying approximately 300 mariners, are currently affected by the situation, prompting a heightened state of vigilance and proactive measures to ensure crew safety and continued cargo transport.

The disruptions come amid growing concerns over potential threats to commercial shipping in the region. While CMA CGM does not believe it is being specifically targeted, the company is responding to the broader risks, particularly the potential for falling debris from drones or missiles. The situation is forcing a shift in strategy, with CMA CGM actively establishing alternative “land corridors” to maintain essential supply lines.

“We are in close contact with state authorities to receive recommendations on the safest zones for our vessels to remain,” stated Christine Cabau Woehrel, Executive Vice President in charge of Assets and Operations at CMA CGM, in a recent interview. “We have safety protocols in place with our crews, detailing where to go when alerts are triggered, just like all other residents in the area.”

Rerouting and Land Corridors to Maintain Supply Chains

To circumvent the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, CMA CGM has activated alternative routes. These include passages through Oman and the southern United Arab Emirates, south of the strait, as well as routes via the Red Sea and Saudi Arabia. While these land-based solutions offer reduced capacity compared to normal transit through the strait, they are designed to ensure the continued flow of essential goods, including food and water, to the region. The company is prioritizing the movement of “goods of first necessity,” according to Cabau Woehrel.

CMA CGM’s ability to maintain operations is also bolstered by its ownership of a container terminal in Abu Dhabi. This facility provides a crucial logistical hub for crew support, offering access to supplies like food and fresh water, as well as medical evacuation capabilities. “This gives us a guarantee for our teams, knowing that if needed, they can come ashore for replenishment or medical evacuations,” Cabau Woehrel explained.

Crew Welfare and Rotations Remain a Priority

Despite the challenging circumstances, CMA CGM is committed to maintaining crew rotations. The company reports having successfully completed approximately ten crew changes in the last 13 days, utilizing air transport to facilitate the process. “Ensuring the relief of our mariners and the rotation of our crews is very critical, as I think it’s a significant factor for the morale of those on board,” Cabau Woehrel emphasized.

The company is also prioritizing communication with crew families. A 24/7 emergency hotline has been established to provide updates and facilitate contact between mariners and their loved ones. CMA CGM also offers online psychological support to its crews, with a crisis cell activated seven days a week to monitor and address any emerging needs. Cabau Woehrel recounted an instance where the company intervened to connect a mother with her son aboard a vessel, demonstrating their commitment to family support.

Monitoring the Situation and Preparing for Continued Disruption

CMA CGM acknowledges the increased risk posed by vessels linked to the energy sector, particularly oil tankers, which have reportedly been the primary focus of recent activity in the Gulf. However, the company is taking precautions to protect all its vessels from potential damage caused by debris. Christine Cabau Woehrel’s extensive experience in maritime transport, beginning with CMA-CGM in 1987, is proving invaluable during this period.

The situation remains fluid, and CMA CGM continues to monitor developments closely. The company is prepared to adapt its strategies as needed to ensure the safety of its crews and the continuity of its operations. The focus remains on utilizing alternative routes and maintaining open communication with both crews and their families.

As the situation in the Strait of Hormuz evolves, the shipping industry will continue to assess the impact on global trade routes and adjust accordingly. Further developments and potential escalations will undoubtedly shape the strategies employed by companies like CMA CGM in the coming weeks and months.
