Netflix Announces ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Sequel & Directors Return

Netflix is doubling down on the success of its animated musical urban fantasy, KPop Demon Hunters, officially greenlighting a sequel and securing the creative team for a multi-year deal. The announcement comes less than a year after the film debuted on the streaming platform, quickly becoming its most-watched original title with over 500 million views, according to Netflix data.

The sequel will once again be directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the duo behind the original film’s critical and commercial success. This partnership extends beyond the sequel, as Kang and Appelhans have signed an exclusive multi-year writing and directing deal with Netflix for animation projects, signaling the streamer’s commitment to expanding its animated offerings.

KPop Demon Hunters, released on June 20, 2025, follows Huntrix, a K-pop girl group who secretly protect their fans from supernatural threats, battling rival boy band the Saja Boys, who are revealed to be demons in disguise. The film starred the voices of Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun. The film’s unique blend of K-pop culture, mythology, and action resonated with audiences globally.

The original film’s production began in March 2021, drawing inspiration from Kang’s Korean heritage and incorporating visual elements influenced by concert lighting, editorial photography, music videos, anime, and Korean dramas. Marcelo Zarvos composed the score, and the soundtrack featured original songs from various musicians. A sing-along version of the film even enjoyed limited theatrical releases on August 23–24 and October 31–November 2, 2025.

A Sequel Era for KPop and Demon Hunting

News of the sequel arrives via Netflix’s Tudum blog, highlighting the streamer’s enthusiasm for continuing the story. “This is only the beginning,” Kang stated in the announcement. The success of KPop Demon Hunters demonstrates the growing appetite for diverse and culturally rich animated content, particularly those that tap into the global popularity of K-pop.

The film’s impact extends beyond viewership numbers. A dedicated merchandise collection is currently available on the Netflix Shop, offering fans a way to further engage with the world of Huntrix and the Saja Boys.

What to Expect Next

While details regarding the sequel’s plot and release date remain under wraps, the continuation of the story promises more action, music, and supernatural intrigue. With Kang and Appelhans at the helm, and a multi-year deal in place, Netflix is clearly invested in building a franchise around the unique world of KPop Demon Hunters. Fans can anticipate further updates on the sequel’s development in the coming months.
