Paris-Nice 2026: Route, Stages, Teams & Contenders | Cycle21

The 84th edition of the París-Niza cycling race is set to begin on March 8th, 2026, with a new starting location in Achères, marking the 30th city in Yvelines to host a stage of the “Race to the Sun.” The race will culminate on March 15th, not on the traditional Promenade des Anglais due to municipal elections, but at the Riviera stadium in Nice. This shift in tradition promises a thrilling finale to a week-long challenge encompassing sprints, potential echelons, a team time trial, and demanding climbs.

Defending champion Matteo Jorgenson will return to defend his title, but faces a competitive field including riders like Simon Yates (2nd in 2018 and 2022), João Almeida (6th in 2025), Juan Ayuso, Cian Uijtdebroeks, and Mattias Skjelmose (4th in 2024). French hopes will rest on Kévin Vauquelin, Lenny Martinez, and David Gaudu (2nd in 2023). Sprinters Mads Pedersen, Olav Kooij, and Michael Matthews are too expected to contend for stage victories throughout the race.

A total of 22 teams will participate, comprising the 18 WorldTour teams, the top three ProTeams – Cofidis, Pinarello–Q36.5, and Tudor – and an invitation extended to TotalEnergies. The race will be broadcast live on RTVE.

Stage Breakdown: A Diverse Challenge

The 2026 París-Niza route presents a varied challenge for riders, beginning with a relatively flat stage around Carrières-sous-Poissy, featuring the Côte de Chanteloup-les-Vignes, a well-known climb from the Polymultipliée. The following stages will take the peloton through the plains of Gâtinais, an area prone to crosswinds, potentially creating echelons and testing the riders’ resilience.

A team time trial between Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire and Pouilly-sur-Loire (Stage 3) will serve as a key early test, particularly with the Tour de France’s Grand Départ in Barcelona on the horizon. This will be followed by stages in the Morvan region, featuring a climb to Uchon that could prove decisive in the general classification.

The latter half of the race is characterized by a succession of climbs, with Stage 5, the longest of the week at 205.4 km, offering the most significant elevation gain. Stage 6 to Apt will feature a final climb within the last five kilometers, promising a challenging finale. The penultimate stage (Stage 7) will start on the Promenade des Anglais and head to Auron, where Michael Storer delivered a standout performance in the 2025 edition. The final stage will circle the Riviera stadium, culminating in a brutal ascent of the Côte du Linguador, setting the stage for a dramatic conclusion.
