French Police Probed for Slashing Migrant Boat Bound for UK

French authorities have launched an investigation into the conduct of police officers who used a knife to deflate a migrant boat on a beach near Calais.

The investigation follows the circulation of video footage showing officers puncturing a rubber dinghy that had become stuck in the sand. The footage depicts the vessel rapidly losing air after the officers applied the blade to the material, effectively disabling the craft before it could be used to attempt a crossing to the United Kingdom.

The Défenseur des Droits, France’s independent constitutional authority and human rights watchdog, is now reviewing the incident. The agency is examining whether the actions taken by the officers were proportionate and compliant with legal standards regarding the treatment of migrants and the destruction of property.

The event occurred in the coastal region surrounding Calais, a primary departure point for small boat crossings across the English Channel. French security forces have maintained a high-visibility presence in the area to intercept vessels and discourage departures.

While the destruction of boats is a known tactic used to disrupt smuggling operations, the specific circumstances of this incident—namely that the vessel was immobilized on the beach—have prompted the regulatory review. The watchdog is evaluating if the intervention was necessary to prevent an immediate threat or if it constituted an excessive use of force.

The French Ministry of the Interior has not issued a formal statement regarding the specific officers involved in the footage. The Défenseur des Droits has indicated that the probe will continue as it gathers further evidence and testimonies from the personnel present at the scene.
