DZ Mafia: Major Drug Bust in France – 26 Indicted, Including Rappers & Lawyer

Marseille, France – A large-scale operation targeting the “DZ Mafia,” a criminal network dominating drug trafficking in the Marseille region, has resulted in the indictment of 26 individuals, including two rappers and an attorney, French authorities announced Saturday. The operation, involving approximately 900 gendarmes, marks a significant escalation in efforts to dismantle the organization, which authorities say has evolved beyond drug trafficking to include a “branch armed capable of projecting commando teams” across France to defend its interests.

The crackdown, initiated in early 2024, aims to strike at the “heart” of the DZ Mafia, described by Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone as far from a “police or journalistic construction.” According to officials, the group has amassed substantial financial resources and diversified its activities into extortion and, more recently, the manipulation of the music industry through production labels. The investigation has revealed a capacity for corruption and a willingness to use violence to maintain control, particularly in the lucrative drug market.

Key Arrests and Allegations

Among those facing charges are three alleged leaders of the DZ Mafia – Amine O., Gabriel O., and Mahdi Z. – all of whom were already in custody prior to this week’s operation, held in high-security prisons. They are now being prosecuted under recent legislation targeting participation in a criminal organization, reflecting a shift in legal strategy to address the group’s structure. Fifteen individuals have been placed in provisional detention, with nine of those being women, highlighting what authorities describe as a “veritable feminization of narcotrafficking.” Twenty of those implicated originate from the Marseille region, confirming the organization’s strong roots in the area.

A particularly concerning aspect of the investigation centers on allegations of corruption within the legal system. An attorney from Lyon has been placed in isolation while under investigation for allegedly being compromised, enabling one of the DZ Mafia leaders to communicate with the outside world from prison. According to the prosecutor, associates of a leading member of the DZ Mafia fraudulently registered a phone line under the name of an attorney to facilitate these communications. Hubert Mortemard de Boisse, the head of the Lyon Bar Association, has initiated proceedings to suspend the attorney’s practice, calling for a clear distinction between this individual’s actions and the integrity of the legal profession, as reported by the Agence France-Presse.

Expanding Criminal Activities and Financial Gains

The investigation has uncovered evidence of the DZ Mafia’s expanding reach and financial power. Authorities estimate that each leader of the organization accumulates a net profit of approximately €300,000 per month, with these funds being reinvested or laundered to ensure the organization’s longevity and expansion, according to prosecutor Bessone. The group’s dominance in the Marseille drug market has reportedly brought a period of relative calm to the region, a consequence of its monopolistic control.

Two rappers, identified as Dika and KITKVT, have also been implicated in the case. Dika, a Marseille-based artist with millions of views on YouTube and collaborations with prominent French rappers like Naps and Alonzo, has been placed under judicial control. KITKVT, still, remains in provisional detention. Their alleged connections to the DZ Mafia involve potential extortion or financial dealings under the guise of music production labels.

The Rise of the DZ Mafia

The name “DZ Mafia” references Algeria, reflecting the origins of many of its members. The group rose to prominence following a violent period in Marseille in 2023, supplanting the rival Yoda clan. Colonel Olivier Leblanc, commander of the Marseille Research Section, cautioned against declaring victory, stating that the organization operates like a hydra, capable of regenerating even after significant setbacks.

The operation resulted in the seizure of €4 million, 12 properties, and luxury items.

Authorities acknowledge that dismantling the DZ Mafia will be a complex and ongoing process. The investigation will continue to focus on tracing financial flows, identifying additional collaborators, and disrupting the organization’s ability to operate both within and outside of prison walls. The next steps will likely involve further judicial proceedings and potential asset forfeiture actions.
