CHICAGO – The Nebraska men’s basketball team saw its impressive season arrive to an complete Friday night, falling to Purdue 74-58 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament at the United Center. The loss concludes Nebraska’s tournament run, but the team’s fate remains in the hands of the NCAA Selection Committee as they await their postseason destiny.
The seventh-seeded Boilermakers (25-8) controlled the game from the opening tip, jumping out to an early lead and maintaining momentum throughout. Despite a late push from the second-seeded Huskers (26-6), Purdue proved too strong, advancing to the tournament semifinals. This marks the first meeting between the two schools in the Big Ten Tournament since 2013, with Purdue extending their series lead to 1-2.
Purdue’s dominant performance was fueled by a strong offensive showing, led by Fletcher Loyer’s game-high 19 points. Oscar Cluff contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, while C.J. Cox added 12 points for the Boilermakers. Nebraska struggled to find consistent offense, shooting 39.3 percent from the floor, compared to Purdue’s 44.8 percent.
The Huskers, despite a valiant effort to close the gap in the second half, were hampered by Purdue’s rebounding advantage (37-29) and ability to capitalize on turnovers, outscoring Nebraska 17-5 in points off turnovers. Pryce Sandfort led Nebraska with 15 points, while Rienk Mast added 11.
Early Boilermakers Surge Sets the Tone
Purdue wasted no time establishing control, racing to a 13-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game. The Boilermakers connected on 5-of-6 shots from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, forcing a Nebraska timeout. While the Huskers briefly responded with baskets from Mast and Sandfort, Purdue quickly rebuilt their lead, extending it to as many as 18 points in the first half. A late surge, including three-pointers from Jared Garcia, helped Nebraska close the gap to 41-28 by halftime.
Second-Half Comeback Falls Short
Nebraska attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, trimming the Purdue lead to as few as eight points with 8:24 remaining after a three-pointer from Sam Hoiberg. However, Purdue responded with a decisive run, fueled by a putback dunk from Cluff, to regain control and ultimately secure the victory. The Boilermakers closed out the game with a 14-2 run, sealing their spot in the semifinals.
Sandfort’s 15 points against Purdue brought his season total to 571, moving him into 10th place on Nebraska’s all-time single-season scoring list, surpassing James Palmer Jr.’s 568 points from the 2017-18 season. He also extended his single-season three-point record to 113, placing him 10th on the Big Ten’s single-season list and just one shy of eighth place. Jared Garcia contributed six points off the bench, his highest output since December 13th, and Rienk Mast reached double figures for the 22nd time this season.
Looking Ahead to Selection Sunday
Despite the loss, Nebraska’s strong regular season performance (26-6) positions them well for an NCAA Tournament berth.
