North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-launch of 600mm-calibre multiple rocket launchers on Saturday, according to state media KCNA. The launched rockets reportedly struck an island target in the East Sea of Korea, approximately 364.4 kilometers away, with “100 percent accuracy,” KCNA reported.
The launch occurred as the United States and South Korea conducted joint military drills, and follows recent overtures from former U.S. President Donald Trump towards Pyongyang for dialogue, according to Reuters. South Korea’s military confirmed that more than ten ballistic missiles were fired by North Korea into the sea on Saturday.
The missiles were launched from an area near Pyongyang around 1:20 p.m. Local time (0430 GMT), targeting waters off the country’s east coast, according to a statement from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The test-launch comes amid ongoing regional military tensions.
