Santa Fe, NM – Two years after facing a potential shutdown, La Familia Health is not only surviving but expanding its critical services to meet the growing needs of the community. The organization, which serves a significant population of uninsured individuals and those living in poverty, has begun hiring new providers and establishing new programs, including pediatric dentistry and a retail pharmacy, according to recent reports.
The turnaround comes after a period of intense struggle in late 2023, when La Familia Health had only approximately 90 days of operating cash and had lost 40% of its medical staff. An emergency fundraising campaign, coupled with new leadership and operational adjustments, proved vital in keeping the four Santa Fe clinics open and charting a path toward stability. The organization’s resilience highlights the importance of accessible healthcare in the region.
From Crisis to Growth: A New Chapter for La Familia Health
The challenges faced by La Familia Health weren’t simply financial. A wave of departures among doctors and dentists created significant turmoil within the organization. Dr. Matthew Schmidt, who joined La Familia in 2012 after completing his medical residency, even submitted – and then rescinded – his resignation during this period. “There was a lot of turmoil,” Schmidt said, noting that the organization didn’t initially appear to be heading in a positive direction.
Still, the situation began to improve with the arrival of new CEO Brandy Van Pelt-Ramirez and a renewed focus on operational efficiency. Van Pelt-Ramirez emphasized that while the organization has made significant progress, new challenges in the healthcare landscape continue to emerge daily. “We have come a long way,” she said. “The good news is, we are not anywhere near the situation we were in, but there seems to be these new up-and-coming challenges every single day that we’re facing in health care.”
A Patient’s Story: Years of Reliance on La Familia Health
For Randy Murray, La Familia Health has been a lifeline for the past 15 years. He initially sought grief support from the organization after the sudden death of his partner. He continues to see a behavioral health practitioner at La Familia weekly and has also utilized their primary care and dental services. “I never left,” Murray said. “They were my stability.” His experience underscores the deep connection patients have with the organization and the vital role it plays in their lives.
La Familia Health’s expansion includes not only new services but also a commitment to navigating the evolving healthcare environment. The organization is actively preparing for changes in federal policy and their potential impact on healthcare providers. This proactive approach is crucial for ensuring long-term sustainability and continued access to care for the community it serves.
The organization’s commitment to serving vulnerable populations remains central to its mission. Access to affordable healthcare, particularly for those without insurance, is a critical issue in Santa Fe and surrounding areas. La Familia Health’s ability to provide comprehensive care, from behavioral health to dental services, makes it a vital resource for many residents.
Looking ahead, La Familia Health will continue to focus on expanding access to care and adapting to the changing healthcare landscape. The organization’s leadership recognizes that ongoing vigilance and innovation are essential for maintaining its stability and fulfilling its mission. The success of La Familia Health serves as a model for other community health organizations facing similar challenges.
