Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges in 2023 Despite Economic Challenges

In 2023, the global renewable energy sector experienced record expansion, with new installations exceeding all previous years, according to the latest report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The agency’s annual review highlights that renewable power generation capacity added more than 310 gigawatts (GW) last year, driven primarily by solar and wind projects.

Solar energy accounted for the largest share of new capacity, with installations growing by over 190 GW—a figure that represents nearly two-thirds of the total expansion. Wind energy followed with more than 110 GW of new capacity, while hydropower and bioenergy also contributed significantly.

The report notes that China remained the dominant player in renewable energy expansion, responsible for approximately 60% of global additions. Europe and the United States also saw substantial growth, with both regions adding over 50 GW each in new renewable capacity.

Despite economic uncertainties, the cost of renewable energy technologies continued to decline. The average price of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules dropped by about 15% in 2023, making solar power increasingly competitive with fossil fuel-based generation.

IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera stated in a press release: “The renewable energy transition is accelerating, but we must maintain this momentum to meet climate goals. The data shows that renewables are not only growing faster than ever but are also becoming more affordable.”

Looking ahead, the agency projects that global renewable energy capacity could reach over 6,000 GW by 2030 if current trends continue. However, experts warn that greater policy support and investment will be necessary to achieve this target.

The growth in renewable energy comes as fossil fuel dependence remains a challenge in many regions. Coal-fired power plants still supply about 36% of global electricity, though their share has been gradually declining in recent years.

As governments and businesses increasingly prioritize sustainability, the renewable energy sector is poised for continued expansion, though the pace of adoption will depend on global economic conditions and policy commitments.
