Kirsty Neilson: Tributes to ‘Extraordinary’ Mum Who Died Aged 39

The community is mourning the loss of Kirsty Neilson, a 39-year-old mother of two from Hedon, who passed away on February 24th after a courageous battle with cancer. Described by those who knew her as a “ray of sunshine” and an “extraordinary woman,” Neilson’s strength and positive spirit throughout her illness have left a lasting impact on her loved ones.

Neilson, a nursery nurse, was diagnosed with kidney cancer in early 2024. Despite the incurable diagnosis, she continued to live life to the fullest, documenting her experiences as a single parent navigating cancer through an Instagram account called Incurable to Hope. Her story resonated with many, raising awareness about the challenges of parenting while living with a serious illness. She often referred to herself and her two young sons as the “three musketeers.”

Friends and family remember Neilson as a vibrant and selfless individual. Charlotte Mariano, a close friend, shared, “Kirsty was just full of life – and very childlike at times. She just loved children, being playful. My boys loved her because she was often on the same wavelength as them. She was just such fun and a lovely, lovely person. She’d do anything for anybody and was really kind.” Mariano also noted Neilson’s determination, stating, “She just desperately wanted to live and witness her children grow up. So she put up a really considerable fight.”

Neilson’s commitment to her sons extended beyond her diagnosis. She continued to pursue personal growth, returning to college to gain further qualifications and even passing her driving test. Mariano fondly remembers Neilson’s creative spirit and love for fantasy books, noting she “had lots of big dreams and lots of aspirations.” Recognizing the potential challenges her illness posed to her children’s future, Neilson’s family proactively stepped in to provide support and stability.

Following the news of her incurable cancer in January 2024, Mariano and her husband offered to care for Neilson’s two sons, ensuring they would be supported by a loving family. The boys are now living with their auntie and uncle, who already have two children of their own. Mariano emphasized the boys’ resilience, saying they have been “extremely brave and just like Kirsty” in their courage.

A fundraiser established by Amy Rothwell, a close friend of Neilson’s, has garnered over £3,500 to support the boys’ future. Rothwell described a poignant moment just two days before Neilson’s passing, sharing, “I was in Dove House Hospice with her, and a couple of other friends, and it was one of the nicest moments. I didn’t know it was going to be one of my last with her, but she was just a ray of sunshine.” Rothwell continued, praising Neilson’s positive outlook and unwavering spirit: “She was hilarious, funny and just a lovely, caring woman that was always trying to see the positive side of things. She’d say things like ‘this cancer has never met anyone like me before’. She was just so positive.”

Rothwell also acknowledged the emotional toll of Neilson’s illness, noting she was “also petrified,” but always maintained a “heart of gold.” She praised Charlotte and Frankie for their unwavering support throughout Neilson’s journey, calling them “absolute angels.”

A funeral service to celebrate Kirsty Neilson’s life will be held on March 27th at Lelley Fields Crematorium. Her legacy of strength, kindness, and unwavering love will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew her.

The loss of a parent is a deeply painful experience for children, and the support of family and the community will be crucial as Neilson’s sons navigate their grief. The funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will provide essential resources to help them thrive. As the community comes together to remember Kirsty Neilson, her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of cherishing every moment and facing life’s challenges with courage and grace.
