Ludhiana health officials are actively working to counter false narratives surrounding the ongoing Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign, a crucial initiative aimed at protecting young girls from cervical cancer. The 90-day program, targeting approximately 40,000 girls aged 14 to 15, has seen a slower-than-anticipated uptake, prompting a multi-pronged approach involving local leaders and community outreach.
The HPV vaccine is a preventative measure against cervical cancer, the second most common cancer affecting women, according to district health officials. While the vaccine typically costs around Rs 4,000 in the private sector, This proves being offered free of charge at designated government health facilities throughout Ludhiana. Despite its proven efficacy and long-term availability – having been administered for 10 to 15 years – the campaign faces challenges from misinformation circulating, particularly on social media.
Mobilizing Community Support
To address these concerns and boost vaccination rates, the Ludhiana health department is collaborating with Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and municipal councillors. Civil Surgeon Dr. Ramandeep Kaur explained that these public representatives are being enlisted to champion the cause and disseminate accurate information within their communities. “We have involved all concerned for the campaign, including MLAs and municipal councillors, apart from the civil administration and District Education Office,” Dr. Kaur stated. A video has too been circulated to raise awareness among the public.
Currently, only around 100 to 150 girls out of the eligible 40,000 have received the vaccine, according to sources within the health department. District Immunisation Officer (DIO) Dr. Harpreet Singh attributes the slow pace, in part, to the ongoing school examination season. However, he remains optimistic that momentum will build as exams conclude. “1% of the population has to be vaccinated and girls above 14 and below 15 years of age are being administered the vaccine,” Dr. Singh noted, adding that the response is “okay” given the current circumstances.
Addressing Rumors and Ensuring Safety
Officials acknowledge the presence of “bad elements” spreading misinformation about the vaccine, particularly on social media platforms. Dr. Singh emphasized that the vaccine is not new and has a well-established safety profile. To further reassure the public, a standard safety protocol is in place at all vaccination centers: each beneficiary is observed for 30 minutes post-vaccination.
MLA Atam Nagar Kulwant Sidhu confirmed his support for the campaign, stating that he actively encourages parents to have their daughters vaccinated during public meetings, highlighting the free availability and offering his contact information for any concerns. “It is very important for the prevention of cancer,” Sidhu said.
