A 6-magnitude earthquake shook Canada’s west coast

No tsunami threat is reported and no damage or injuries have been reported.

The quake’s epicenter was just eight kilometers deep, more than 225 kilometers southwest of Port McNeil on Vancouver Island in the western province of British Columbia.

According to the USGS, the impact occurred at 8 a.m. 44 min. local (6:44 p.m. Lithuanian) time.

Residents of Victoria on Vancouver Island told AFP they did not feel the quake, and Natural Resources Canada seismic analyst Brindley Smith said the agency “doesn’t expect any damage to buildings.”

He noted that smaller earthquakes occur in the region several times a year.

“A six-magnitude tremor is a bit more unusual, but it’s nothing to worry regarding,” Smith added.

British Columbia emergency services tweeted that there was no tsunami threat.
