The capture of the she-bear called Jj4, which at the beginning of April killed a man in a forest in the north of the country, divides Italy while waiting for a court in the autonomous province of Trento decides whether or not to authorize their slaughter.
The female bear, one of the specimens grown under protection in the woods of northern Italy, was identified and captured this morning as the person responsible for killing a 26-year-old “runner” on April 5 with whom he met in the protected area of Mount Peller.
After being identified thanks to the genetic analyzes ordered by the Trento prosecutor’s office, it was determined that the bear had already attacked two hikers in the same place in June 2020as reported today by regional authorities at a press conference.
April 14th, the Regional Administrative Court (TAR) of Trento issued a decree suspending the slaughter order of the bear signed by the president of the Province, Maurizio Fugatti, although he left open the possibility of his capture.
Fugatti announced today that, once captured, the bear will be transferred to a wildlife center waiting to be able to review the decision of the TAR and authorize the sacrifice of the animal. Meanwhile, the possible execution of the bear aroused the anger of animal organizations from the country.
For the president of the animal party, Stefano Fuccelli, Fugatti committed “the crime of instigation to commit a crime both in the consummated form and in the attempted one” when seeking execution of the animal. The TAR’s decision to stop the execution of the bear came after a presentation by the Anti Vivisection League (LAV) to suspend the sacrifice and take Jj4 to a “safe haven”, according to a statement.
“We no longer have problem bears in the area,” Fugatti said. this Tuesday when announcing the capture of the bear, and in this way seeks to bring tranquility to a region that has tourism as one of its main activities.
