A Belgian goalkeeper saves a penalty kick… and dies immediately

Belgian goalkeeper Arne Espiel died at the age of 25 following he fell on the field and lost consciousness last Saturday, moments following saving a penalty kick while representing his local amateur league team.

Unsung team Winkel Sport B was leading 2-1 before rivals Vchterusbeck were awarded a penalty in the second half.

According to media reports, Espel saved the penalty kick and immediately fell on the field. Ambulances rushed towards him to try to save him using an electric shock device, but he died following being taken to the hospital.

The Belgian club said in a statement: Finkel Sport is in deep mourning due to the sudden death of Arne Espel. Our deepest condolences to his family and friends for the sad accident.

An autopsy on Espel’s body was scheduled to determine the cause of death on Monday.

According to a local report, more than 1,000 people attended Isbel’s funeral on Monday night.
