A bus carrying senior citizens to a casino collided with a cargo truck with a trailer did not have the right of way, police said Friday after watching video of the crash that killed 15 people.

Rob Lasson, superintendent of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, said police also compiled witness statements — passing motorists — that corroborated what investigators saw on video captured by the trailer camera.

“This video indicates that the bus entered the road where the cargo truck with a trailer had the right of wayLasson said, later adding: “We don’t know why the bus moved forward.”

He said that at the moment the agents have not been able to talk with the bus driver, who is hospitalized. The driver of the trailer has been released from a hospital. Lasson said police were not blaming anyone at this time and are still investigating. Agents are examining the cargo truck for mechanical problems, he added.

Lasson said investigators have yet to identify the bodies of the 15 dead, though those who were not injured are presumed dead. He said the ages of those killed and injured range from 58 to 88 years. Nineteen were women and six were men..

Fatal trip in Canada

The group of 25 seniors were on a day trip from the rural Manitoba town of Dauphin when the collision occurred on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Six of the 10 older adults who survived are in critical condition, health officials said Friday. The remaining four were also hospitalized. Most suffered head injuries and broken bones.

“This is a group of older adult patients, so recoveries are going to be long and certainly can be complicated,” said Dr. Shawn Young, director of operations for the Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg, at a conference in press.

Forensic Director John Younes said efforts are continuing to identify the deceased, using fingerprints, dental records and, if necessary, artificial hip serial numbers and even DNA.

“The reason we have to achieve identification with scientific means is that most, if not all, of the deceased have considerable facial trauma, so it is not possible to identify them visually,” he stated.
