The Kuwaiti Ministry of Information announced that it had begun taking undisclosed measures against the “Ramadan series that is offensive to Kuwaiti society,” stressing its complete rejection of any artistic works that insult the State of Kuwait or affect the morals of Kuwaiti society.

The ministry pledged that it “will take the necessary measures to confront any artistic work that offends Kuwaiti society.” The Ministry said in a statement issued (at dawn on Saturday) that it “has begun taking several measures against the Ramadan series that is offensive to Kuwaiti society and to prevent the recurrence of such offensive scenes and to demand that all concerned respect the laws, regulations and charters and take the necessary measures to stop showing such scenes in the future.”

The Ministry of Information stressed that artistic works must carry sophisticated moral messages, respect the privacy of all societies, and refrain from violating principles.

The Ministry praised the role played by public benefit associations that denounced such actions, which demonstrates societal awareness in the State of Kuwait and its rejection of any scenes that affect its ethics and established principles.

The Ministry of Information statement did not mention the name of the series around which the punitive measures revolved, but a wave of violent criticism spread across social media in Kuwait, directed specifically at the series “One Wife Is Not Enough,” written by Heba Hamada, directed by Ali Al-Ali, produced by Jamal Sinan, and starring: Hoda. Hussein and Sahar Hussein, Fatima Al-Safi, Nour Al-Ghandour, and Hamad Ashkanani, and from Egypt: Majed Al-Masry, Ayten Amer, and Shaima Younis, and from Bahrain, Khaled Al-Shaer and Nour Al-Sheikh, and from Lebanon, Cynthia Samuel.

Criticism has focused on the series, which is currently being shown on MBC and the “Shahid” platform, as it distorts the image of Kuwaiti society and conflicts with the morals and customs of society.

Kuwait Union for Artistic Production

The Kuwaiti Union of Artistic and Theatrical Production Companies, Advertising and Entertainment Industries issued a statement (Saturday) in which it expressed its “dissatisfaction and denunciation of the repeated abuse of Kuwaiti society, especially in the last five years, and specifically in the holy month of Ramadan, by producing some artistic works that were photographed and broadcast from outside the State of Kuwait.” And for a non-Kuwaiti producer and non-Kuwaiti stars.”

He pointed out that “these works are non-Kuwaiti works and have no connection to Kuwaiti society, because they are not subject to the oversight of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information and are not subject to any governmental regulatory body inside Kuwait. If there are a small number of Kuwaiti actors among them, the work cannot be considered Kuwaiti.”

He added: “We would like to emphasize that we never generalize, because there are many Kuwaiti actors and residents of Kuwait who provide us with fine artistic works that befit them and the Kuwaiti and Gulf society, even if the filming was outside Kuwait and they speak the Kuwaiti dialect. They represent Kuwaiti drama well.”

The Union affirmed: “We, in turn, put our hand in hand with all His Excellency the relevant ministers, namely the media, the Interior, and the Foreign Affairs, to establish appropriate controls and penalties for every artist who tempts himself, whether Kuwaiti or resident, to insult or distort the image of Kuwaiti society outside Kuwait.”
