“This is a particularly promising result given the current lack of effective treatments against liver tumors, which is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States,” said lead researcher Guangfu Li.
According to the Medical Express website, the treatment includes a tumor-suppressing lipid molecule C6-ceramide nanoliposome (LipC6) and an antibody called CTLA4. When used together in this study, the combination significantly slowed tumor growth.
Not every component of the mixture was effective in fighting liver cancer alone, but the response was strong when a combination of the two was used.
Since the ingredients in the treatment have previously been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, the mixture is expected to reach the stage of human application soon.
