A couple and a 17-year-old died in an accident in Styria

According to the Pöllau fire department, a couple (61 and 59 years old) from Wenigzell were trapped in the completely demolished car. They were cut free by rescue workers, but their injuries were too severe. The 17-year-old driver of the other car was also unable to be saved despite attempts at resuscitation.

As the Styrian State Police Directorate announced on Monday morning, the two vehicles crashed between Köppelreith and Pöllau at around 8:15 p.m. for an unknown reason. According to Stefan Prinz, commander of the Pöllau volunteer fire department, who was on site as operations manager, it is a straight stretch of road where the speed limit is 100 km/h.

17-year-old climbed out of the car

Due to the force, both vehicles were thrown several meters from the road into an adjacent field. Following vehicle drivers called the emergency number. “When we arrived, the couple was massively trapped in the car,” said Prinz. Signs of life were barely noticeable, so a “crash rescue” was carried out by the emergency services. Although the measures worked well, the help came too late for both of them, the commander described in the APA interview. The 17-year-old from the Weiz district probably climbed out of his car himself despite his serious injuries. “The resuscitation measures were unsuccessful,” Prinz continued.

The relatives are cared for by a crisis intervention team. According to the police, all three bodies have now been released for burial by the Graz public prosecutor’s office. There was apparently no evidence that any of the drivers were impaired by alcohol. Since there are no direct witnesses to the accident, it may not be possible to determine the cause at all.
