Many expectant parents have a special party to announce the pregnancy and reveal the gender of their baby to friends and family. But for Dara and Eric, it is different, as relayed by CBSNews.
Dara is a nurse and has attended many births. And it’s because she prefers “surprise” births that she decided to do the same! On the other hand, Dara said that for 50 years, no boy has been born from her side of the family. Already having one daughter, she was almost sure of having a second.
“My husband always thought it would be a boy, but I wasn’t at all convinced. I could already see myself reusing my eldest daughter’s clothes. It wasn’t until a few minutes before the birth that I realized this baby might be a boy. And then I panicked because I didn’t know much about raising a boy,” she says.
The surprise is big! It’s finally a boy!
There are ultrasound machines available today that show a 4D view of the baby’s face at around 12 weeks. Parents therefore no longer need to wait 40 weeks to find out if they are having a girl or a boy. But Dara, 29 at the time and originally from Columbus, Georgia, chose to do things the old-fashioned way.
When Dara learned that she had given birth to a boy, she was surprised! Her reaction was captured by photographer Neely Ker-Fox, a family friend. The latter had already photographed more than 100 births to date, and she admits that Dara’s reaction was by far the most authentic she was able to immortalize. It’s not for nothing that his photos went viral and went around the world!
Ker-Fox says that five minutes before the baby was born, the couple considered the possibility of having a boy. And moments later, the baby boy was born! According to Ker-Fox, Dara jumped with joy and excitement: “Oh my God! It’s a boy, I can’t believe it’s a boy! ” she says.
