A terrible tragedy affects a Flemish family, many newspapers in the north of the country report on Monday morning. This weekend, Wim (37) and Joyce (36) from Koningshooikt died following a mysterious car accident while returning from the wedding of a couple of friends celebrated 4 kilometers from their home .
Around 3:30 a.m., Wim and Joyce both got into the back seat of a Porsche Panamera, driven by one of their friends. But 100 meters from their home, for a still undetermined reason, the driver lost control of his vehicle and drove straight on a roundabout, slightly sloping, catapulting the Porsche about ten meters away to finish on the roof in the parking lot of an equestrian center.
Jean De Grande is the first witness to arrive on the scene. He testifies in the newspaper Het Laatste News. He explains that he was awakened by the huge “bang”… But he couldn’t see anything. He then headed to the equestrian center, alerted by someone calling for help… “I heard someone calling for help through the bushes and went to look over there. I saw a woman lying motionless on the ground in the parking lot. A bloody man crawled out of the wreckage. It was clear that everyone needed immediate attention…”
Wim and Joyce died instantly. The other occupants of the car were seriously injured. The couple from Koningshooikt leaves behind two daughters aged 9 and 6. The grandparents testified in the press. They are very worried about their granddaughters: “You think this will never happen to you, but suddenly you both lost children. It is the greatest drama we can imagine. Our granddaughters think mom and dad are on a long trip. For them, this drama is still too abstract”, say Joyce’s parents, Dirk Van Roosbroeck (61) and Suzy Vetters (61).
An investigation is open to determine the circumstances of this accident. According to several newspapers, the driver was the bob of the evening and had neither drunk nor taken drugs. The people in the car had been friends since kindergarten.
A traffic expert was called this Sunday for the smooth running of the investigation. This roundabout is not known to be accident prone.
