Around 60 spectators sat in the small Royal Court Theater Upstairs in London’s Sloane Square when “The Rocky Horror Show” premiered there. In conservative England in the early 1970s, a musical regarding an extraterrestrial, bisexual scientist in drag was not expected to be a hit. But Richard O’Brien’s show, which premiered on June 16, 1973, went on to become a pop culture phenomenon.
