A double spring bridge worth almost 6 billion

In the week that includes the long weekends of April 25th and May 1st, a turnover of around 5.5 billion will be triggered thanks to 16 million Italians ready to depart, of which 1 million will be able to treat themselves to a trip of at least 6 nights away from home . Values that could see further improvements and if the weather conditions improve we could reach 20 million departures while overall spending will reach 6 billion because almost one in three of holidaymakers would like to go to the seaside. As regards the overnight stay formula, almost two thirds will choose the classic tourist accommodation facilities while 12% will opt for the short-term rental formula. This is what emerges from the Focus on the spring long weekends of the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory in collaboration with Swg.

Pay attention to the budget and the dates

If the desire for matches increases, the available budget is stuck at last year’s values, around 320 euros per person. For Liberation Day, over 9 million Italians, one million more than in 2023, will travel to the sea (31%). Another 31% will choose the art cities and villages, the internal areas of the Bel Paese and another 10% towards the mountains for the last skiing of the season because in some locations the ski lifts will be in operation until May 1st. The comparison with 2023 is encouraging: the number of those who go outside their own region, however remaining in Italy (47%) or going abroad (17%), increases by 6 percentage points. The average stay at the destination is also increasing, with 3 out of 10 Italians planning trips of 4 days or more, a third of whom will combine the two bridges and stay more than 6 days at the destination.

Almost 7.5 million Italians will leave for the May 1st long weekend but the destinations in this case too will be guided by the uncertain weather. One in four will aim for the seaside, art cities and villages total 22% while the campaign for trips out of town totals 14% of preferences. The mountain is stable. The range of travel of Italians traveling is expanding: those who will remain in the area of residence or in the region are sharply decreasing, to 39% from 51% in 2023, while the share of those who will go abroad grows by 14%. The per capita budget is expected to decrease by 10%, from 340 to 310 euros. A sign that families will have to do acrobatics to respect the budget. «It will be a complicated exercise to make it compatible with the “incremental” forecasts of duration and radius of the holiday» Confcommercio reports in a note.
