Beijing: China is preparing to open its borders to foreign tourists after three years, which were closed after the outbreak of Covid. Visa procedures for foreign tourists will resume from tomorrow. According to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this method will continue in areas that did not require a visa to travel before Covid.
The decision was made with the aim of boosting the tourism sector to help the growth rate in the face of a decline in the country’s economy. China recently lifted restrictions on its citizens traveling abroad.
Officials have said they don’t expect a large influx of visitors or a significant boost to the economy for some time after the borders are open. The resumption of tourist visa issuance is aimed at normalizing traffic between China and other countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that all foreigners holding visas granted before March 28, 2020 will be able to enter China within the specified date.
Cruise ships passing through the port of Shanghai will also resume visa-free entry to the southern tourist island of Hainan. Hainan Island is an all-time favorite tourist destination for Russian tourists. It will also resume visa-free entry to Guangdong for foreigners from Hong Kong and Macau.
Foreigners can also participate in events like the China Development Forum to be held in Beijing at the end of this month and the Shanghai Autoshow in April. The Asian Games, which were postponed last year due to Covid-19, are also scheduled to be held in China in September.
China’s human rights issues, political situation, foreign policy and concerns over the Covid-19 pandemic are believed to have fueled sentiment against the country in the West.
Post-Covid, tourism in China has seen a major decline. A Chinese official was quoted by Archyde.com as saying that the political climate here is playing a big role in holding back foreign tourists. In 2019, international tourism revenue accounted for only 0.9% of China’s gross domestic product.
