A message circulating on social networks greatly exaggerates the nature of the data shared by the “Journal” application and who can see it.

It is on Facebook (and to a lesser extent TikTok, Instagram, etc.) that we see a message appear questioning Apple’s “Journal” application under iOS 17, the very theoretical aim of which is to serve as a newspaper intimate to iPhone owners, as explained by the English-speaking media DigitalTrends. The post even claims that strangers would be able to see your name and location if they are nearby.

In fact, the post is referring to the “Logging Suggestions” feature, which has been present on iOS since last year. Among the suggestions in question, there is indeed a “Discoverable by others” mode. But as explained Apple, “Logging suggestions use on-device processing to intelligently group moments and events together to provide you with personalized suggestions. Using information stored on your device, journaling suggestions can recommend specific moments you can remember and write about. You control which suggestions are shared with journaling applications that use journaling suggestions.”

And to add: “Logging suggestions use Bluetooth to detect the number of devices and contacts around you, without storing which of those specific contacts were present. This information is used to improve and prioritize your suggestions. They are stored on the device and are not shared with Apple.”
