“A First in History: The Potential Manchester Derby Final in the Oldest Football Competition”

A sky blue wave and a red wave will roll over Wembley this weekend, one day apart. The Citizens will be in London on Saturday (5:30 p.m.) and the Red Devils will play their respective semi-finals on Sunday (5:45 p.m.). With the objective that one and the same huge sky blue and red tide from the North of England falls on the capital on June 3 for the final. A potential first.

As old as it is (created in 1871), the oldest football competition in the world has never had a Manchester derby in the final. This 142nd edition could finally be the right one, since we have rarely seen the two neighboring clubs be so close to reaching the last step in the same year.

Twelve times titled (the record is set at 14 by Arsenal), United have played only two finals in the past fifteen years: one lost to Chelsea in 2018, the other won in 2016 against Crystal Palace. While City has surprisingly only appeared in the final three times over the past forty years: with two successes (2011 and 2019).

”Why have we rarely gone far in recent years? One of the reasons is fatiguethink Pep Guardiola. This year we have more. The Champions League quarter-final was so exhausting and we need to recover. Every season I feel like we are not physically ready. Hopefully, this time we will be.”

Kevin De Bruyne’s team should not be surprised by the fine formation of Sheffield United, runner-up to Burnley in the Championship and also a candidate for the rise in the Premier League. For its part, Manchester United will have to recover from their enormous disappointment in the quarter-finals of the Europa League (3-0 defeat in Sevilla) to try to get Brighton out.

”We know it will be a completely different opponent, a completely different styleestimates Erik ten Hag. We know what to do, but we need a huge step forward and a better performance to beat Brighton because they are a tough team.”
