The United Nations announced on Friday that the first Russian freighter loaded with fertilizer will set sail for Africa on November 21, following the renewal of the Black Sea grain corridor agreement.

This emerges from statements by the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad), Rebeca Grynspan, during a press conference, during which she referred to the announcement of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on the renewal of the agreement allowing the export of Ukrainian cereals, for 120 days, starting from November 19.

Responding to a question about Russian fertilizers stuck in European ports amid the war in Ukraine, Grynspan said: “The first shipment of 20,000 tons of fertilizer is due to leave one of the ports in the Netherlands on November 21 bound for Malawi, passing through Mozambique (…) The ship is being loaded”.

“There are about 300,000 tonnes of fertilizer in European ports,” said the UN official, before adding that this first shipment is “very important because Malawi is in the red when it comes to fertilizers”

Erdogan announced on Twitter on Thursday the renewal of the Black Sea grain corridor agreement for a period of 120 days, starting on November 19.

The Turkish president explained that this decision, taken by Türkiye, the United Nations, Russia and Ukraine, results from the four-party talks organized by his country.

The signing ceremony of the “Document on the initiative for safe shipment of grain and foodstuffs from Ukrainian ports” between Türkiye, Russia, Ukraine and the United Nations, was held on July 22, in Istanbul, under the patronage of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and United Nations Secretary General António Guterres.

The agreement, scheduled to last 120 days, guarantees the security of grain exports blocked in Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea (Eastern Europe), to the world.
