The opinions Metacritic are often a fairly reliable indicator of the quality of a game. Well at least, if the game is not the victim of a review bombing. Review bombing, or rotting the ratings of a game, rightly or not, is becoming more and more common and represents a real danger for video game studios.

Of course, reviews remain an accessible method for players to make their opinion of a game known and potentially recommend some or criticize others. Although we like to think that a majority of these reviews are written objectively and with the heart, some are not always deserved and this is the case of the Metacritic reviews of Chained Echoes, a JRPG that has everything to seduce!

A beloved game on Steam gets destroyed on Metacritic for no reason

Developped by Matthias Linda and published by Deck13 was very well received for a JRPG created by independents. With 91% positive reviews on Steam over 3000 ratingswe can say that the game is a success for its genre and therefore all indications would be that it would receive a good rating on Metacritic. However, the game has been close to the abyss for some time. Indeed, the game has for a while been the victim of a wave of review bombing, for no apparent reason while the various review sites had rated it very well!

It’s our turn now. ChainedEchoes was reviewed on Metacritic. Only ratings, no reviews. No reasons. We don’t know why, it happened all of a sudden. Didn’t Metacritic say the site wanted to prevent this sort of thing? It may be reserved for AAA.

A message full of incomprehension posted by the product manager of Deck 13.

A situation that seemed to have happened for no reason and that was enough to destroy the game on the platform. Metacritic being one of the best known platforms to judge the games, a bad rating on this site is often a very bad sign.

From, Metacritic seems to have fixed the issue, but apparently no leads have been found on why. This kind of situation could seriously harm small studios and it remains curious that it is possible to see this kind of thing coming out of nowhere!
