Doyle Thomas ‘Tommy’ Stevens Jr. and Virginia McCarem are from Kingsport, Tennessee. Dobbins-Bennett met in high school and soon fell in love. The rest of the trip was together. The two were together after high school and into graduate school, at the University of Tennessee. Then they got married on September 9, 1954.
After serving as a first lieutenant in the US Army, Tommy began his career as a transportation manager for Burlington Industries. Later he established his own company called Distribution and Transportation Services. Virginia also worked at Tommy’s company. Along with work, Virginia was active in local church, school, and civic groups. The couple, who reside in Memphis, have two children. In retirement, the couple moved to Franklin to be with their children and grandchildren.
Lately suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, Tommy moved into the memory care unit of the assisted living facility here. His wife Virginia was also here. His health condition worsened as he developed respiratory problems and contracted pneumonia. He was transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and admitted to the hospital’s palliative care unit when he became incapacitated.

On the same day that Tommy was taken to the hospital, his wife, Virginia, who was seriously injured in a fall, also arrived at the same hospital. She was also admitted to the trauma ICU of the medical center with broken ribs, fractured spine and bruised hip. Then both of them were shifted to adjacent beds. Their daughter Karen Krieger, who was with them, said that the two were holding hands all the time in their last days.
When Tommy left on September 8, Virginia was holding his hand and his children and family were by his side. It was a day before their 69th wedding anniversary. Virginia also departed on September 17 in the same berth. As if each other decided that the next wedding anniversary will be in heaven…
