“A list of assassinations and arrests” fuels tension between the United States and Russia

The United States has warned the United Nations of the existence of a black list drawn up by Moscow that includes Ukrainians, it said, to be liquidated in the event of an invasion, according to an official letter from Washington to the international organization.

And the letter addressed to the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, stated that the United States had “reliable information that Russian forces are preparing lists of Ukrainians to be killed, or sent to camps in the event of a military occupation of Ukraine.”

The letter, signed by the US ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Sheba Crocker, refers to “credible information” regarding the use of force “to disperse peaceful demonstrations” or any other form of opposition from Ukrainian civil society.

The US ambassador warned that the Russian invasion of Ukraine could lead to abuses such as kidnappings or acts of torture and could target political opponents.

In mid-February, the Kremlin denounced US “hysteria” over Ukraine.

On Sunday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken considered that the presence of Russian forces in Belarus indicates that Russia is “on the verge” of invading Ukraine, which Moscow denies, despite the buildup of 150,000 troops on the border.
