A little night bite with Yet Another Zombie Survivors

The name is clearly meant to make people smile: no encore an imitation game Vampire Survivors, always? Well yes. This time it’s about Yet Another Zombie Survivors, a game developed and published by Awesome Games Studio which, as the name suggests, features the walking dead. In very large quantities, of course.

The popularity of the title developed by poncle will have had the advantage, or the disadvantage, it depends, of fueling a particularly rapid development cycle that led to the publication of a very large number of titles, all relatively similar, in one way or the other. The basic principle remains the same: to ensure that our character(s) survive for a fairly short period of time, always facing an increasing number of increasingly powerful and dangerous enemies, and improving little by little. little our weapons and our skills.

YAZS is no exception to the rule: but rather than entering a fantasy world, as do Vampire Survivors et Halls of Tormentto name a few, or to offer particularly refined visuals, such as 20 Minutes Till Dawnthis new game, released in mid-July in (very) early access, players will find here a mix of all the series and films on zombies, from the beginning of the 21st century to the year 2010, approximately, and the excellent flash game The Stand. This one, launched in 2007, mixed action and planning in a post-apocalyptic context, in addition to contributing to our carpal tunnel syndrome by requiring a staggering amount of clicks each night, when it came time to kill zombies by the dozens in order to to hope to survive until the next day.

Here, however, point of destroyed mouse: yes, it will be necessary to show agility and avoid taking blows, but the work is largely done for us. Because if games of the genre are usually concerned with using our weapons for us – we are a bullet hell, after all! –, YAZS goes further by aiming and shooting for us. All that remains, then, is to move our group of survivors, collect the experience points, avoid the bites and make sure to go get the improvements offered.

In the classic style of zombie adventures, we have the choice between a soldier, a more experienced fighter (but shooting slower), a woman equipped with a bow, an engineer… With other characters that we can possibly unlock by progressing in the game, such as ninja, doctor, etc.

Each survivor has specific abilities and weapons that can obviously be improved, and the player can form his trio of survivors as he sees fit (also depending on chance, of course), or even decide to have only two ( or only one!) survivors. Because directing fewer humans against the horde allows you to specialize faster, and therefore to be more efficient… Here we find some of the optimization strategies that make the beauty of this kind of game.

The action is in keeping with the times: chaotic, violent, with gunshots and explosions everywhere. A kind of spirit of America, fuck yeah, even after the apocalypse. The fact that the only map currently available is a deserted urban area, concreted to infinity, like what exists in almost all North American suburbs, undoubtedly contributes to this impression.

Ultimately, for now, Yet Another Zombie Survivors has the basics of a game that could be very interesting. Already, we begin to want to try again to survive for the 20 minutes necessary before the sun rises. But to really get your money’s worth, you will have to wait for the addition of new features and additional maps.
