Urgent: Couple de Moselle Refused Access to Strasbourg Hospital Due to Departmental Origins
Strasbourg, France – A distressing incident has come to light where a couple from Moselle was denied access to the Strasbourg University Hospital (CHU) solely because they did not reside in the “right” department. This shocking event has sparked an internal investigation and raised concerns about regional discrimination in healthcare access.
Incident Details
The incident occurred in March of this year. The patient, who had been receiving long-term treatment at the Strasbourg Cancer Institute, was sent to the CHU emergency department after tests revealed worrying signs of anemia. However, upon arrival, the couple was told, “We don’t treat 57. If you want to be treated, you have to live in Alsace.”
Left with no choice, the couple traveled 130 kilometers to the Saint-Avold hospital in Moselle. The following day, the patient was transferred back to Strasbourg for continued treatment.
Hospital Response and Investigation
Christian Prudhomme, Secretary General of Force Ouvrière at the Strasbourg University Hospitals, expressed his surprise and concern over the incident. “This is an isolated case,” he stated, “We accept everyone, regardless of their region or origin. The public hospital service has the obligation to provide care to all.”
The CHU has launched an internal investigation into the matter, and the hospital user committee has been seized. Despite the ongoing investigation, the hospital has not provided further comment.
Historical Tensions
This incident sheds light on longstanding tensions between the public hospital and its semi-private neighbor, which specializes in cancer treatment. Relations between the two hospitals have deteriorated, leading to the end of their partnership at the end of 2024.
Ensuring Access to Healthcare
Ensuring equal access to healthcare for all residents, regardless of their department or region, is a critical issue. Patients and their families should not face barriers to necessary medical treatment due to administrative or geographical constraints.
