A new Belgian city cancels its New Year’s fireworks

The city of Maline had opted for a low-noise pyrotechnic show this year. This type of firework goes lower than a traditional one. The distance with the public is also reduced, particularly in the historic heart of the city. The event was therefore canceled for security reasons. The last time bad weather prevented the organization of a fireworks display in Mechelen was in 2017.

Lighting fireworks privately, generally permitted on New Year’s Eve between 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m., is also prohibited, municipal authorities said.

In the neighboring municipality of Willebroek, the authorities have also banned private fireworks due to strong winds.
