A new ice age has begun in Munich!
Toni Söderholm (45) is now on the gang of the German champion EHC Red Bull. The Finn replaces ice hockey legend Don Jackson (66), who previously coached Munich for nine years. The two-time Stanley Cup winner as a player retired after his fourth Munich title (previously 2016, 2017, 2018) in April.
Söderholm already won the championship title as a player with the EHC (2016), now he also wants to make it as a coach. On his debut, the ex-DEB national coach talks about…
…his first days in Munich:
“It’s about making plans for the rest of the season. Compared to the other clubs, we’re starting a little slower, we’ll tighten the screws a little more next week, and the first ice practice session is on August 10th. The mood among the players and the coaching staff is very positive.”

“Defensively we will play a bit differently. Hockey has changed. I’m someone who prefers to train five to ten minutes shorter, but then with full swing, than to stand endlessly on the ice.”

“We have an experienced team, we don’t have to train the players what’s at stake. Accordingly, we also have high goals throughout Europe. I don’t want to talk about rankings now. “I would have liked to have continued playing in 2016. But the Don and Christian Winkler (EHC manager/red.) recognized a coach in me that I hadn’t even seen. That was the first push and also gave me self-confidence that it was something for me. Don is the most important guard rail in my life. He’s always there when I need something, always has an open ear and always has an honest opinion.”
