A new site ivg.gouv.fr for reliable and objective information on voluntary termination of pregnancy

Voluntary termination of pregnancy (IVG) is a right for all women. With the official public information site ivg.gouv.frthe Ministry of Health and Prevention, as well as the Ministry of Equality between Women and Men, Diversity and Equal Opportunities, wish to give people access to objective and reliable information on abortion, fight against preconceived ideas and guide people who wish to terminate a pregnancy.

Ensuring access to reliable information on abortion

It is necessary to be vigilant when searching online for information relating to abortion. Indeed, some websites may indicate that they offer information on abortion but are actually published by activists against the right to abortion. The same goes for the so-called support forums where certain testimonies are fabricated from scratch by opponents of the right to abortion.

In this context, the ivg.gouv.fr website provides the general public with reliable and comprehensive information on abortion. It also offers a directory of sexual health centers (formerly family planning and education centers – CPEF) and EVARS (affective, relational and sexual living spaces). These structures, present throughout the territory, provide information and advice in sexual health.

There is also a national information toll-free number (0 800 08 11 11anonymous and free call) led by the French Family Planning Movement (MFPF) and accessible from the ivg.gouv.fr website. Free, anonymous and accessible in mainland France and the overseas departments, this number is available to answer all questions about sexuality, contraception and abortion. It provides access to a attentive and non-judgmental listening and to be oriented towards competent people and places best suited to the situation and needs of each.

In addition to this number, a chat will be available on the ivg-contraception-sexualites.org site of the French Family Planning Movement from March 30th.

A redesign of the ivg.gouv.fr site on the occasion of the anniversary of the law of March 2, 2022

Since the “Veil” law of January 17, 1975, which decriminalized abortion, successive laws have made it possible to broaden and improve access to and the framework for abortion care.

Just a year ago, the law of March 2, 2022 aimed at strengthening the right to abortion was extended the legal deadline for abortion from 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. She also opened medical abortion via teleconsultation and abolished the minimum legal period of reflection, for minors as for adults, between the information consultation and the psycho-social interview. Finally she authorizes midwives to perform instrumental abortions in health establishments, within the framework defined by a decree to be published. An experiment is also underway on this subject.

Furthermore, a extension of the medical abortion period from 5 to 7 weeks of pregnancy outside a health establishment was permitted by the decree of February 19, 2022.

Following these new measures, the ivg.gouv.fr website was completely overhauled in order to highlight these advances in terms of the right to abortion.
