The team found that they could further desalinate water by filtering it through basalt rocks. This freshly filtered water is now clean enough to grow plants.
The researchers said: “The effect of biologically filtered desalinated water on the growth of turnip and radish plants in rich basalt soil simulated by treated basalt soil was evaluated.”
“Both turnip and radish plants were grown healthily using bio-filtered, desalinated water compared to plants grown with unfiltered bio-water,” they added.
This also led to a significant increase in the dry weight of turnip plants (278%) and the fresh weight of radish bulbs (1047%) grown.
