ALGIERS- The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced, Saturday in a press release, the entry into force, as of July, of a preventive and anticipatory plan to fight against the scourge of locusts, providing for the mobilization of all the necessary material and human resources.
This operational plan consists of the mobilization of all material and human resources as from current July through recourse to the means of intervention of all the countries of the West African region, and to the specialized technicians of the units for the fight against the locusts of the countries concerned, in order to strengthen the surveillance system currently in place to monitor the movements of locusts in the countries of the Sahel, in particular in Mauritania, specifies the press release.
This prevention and control measure against the locust phenomenon, which could increase during the summer breeding season in the Sahelian countries, was approved during the meeting held last June in Oran by the Control Commission locust control in the western zone (CLCPRO), currently chaired by Algeria and which took place in the presence of the ten member countries, according to the ministry.
Algeria will strive, with the aim of implementing the decisions of this Commission, to support the action plan by dispatching experienced explorers in July to carry out surveillance and treatment operations in the summer breeding areas. in Mauritania.
Furthermore, following the invasion of small swarms of locusts from the south-western borders of the country on 19 May, the departments of the ministry represented by the National Institute for Plant Protection (INPV) mobilized all human and material resources to deal with this scourge, according to the same source.
In this context, the ministry reported the treatment of more than 2,500 hectares in Tindouf, Béchar and Adrar, noting the mobilization of sprinkler trucks, but also air resources mobilized by the services of the Ministry of National Defense (MDN). The operation allowed the total treatment of all the groups of locusts tracked by the competent teams.
At the regional level, an unusual movement of locusts has been observed in the summer breeding areas, especially in northern Mauritania, observes the ministry, explaining that this is a natural behavior observed in locusts during their movement. from spring breeding areas to summer breeding areas, the statement concludes.
