A project to develop the agricultural potential of Route 11 in development

The development of the agricultural potential of 1.2 million hectares of unused agricultural land in the District of Cochrane is now underway following an announcement of funding from the province.

The North East Community Network (RCNE), an economic and agricultural development organization in the District of Cochrane, secured $319,800 in public funds to create a business plan to commercialize unused farmland.

These lands are located in the Great Clay Belt, a geological region of fertile land that straddles Ontario and Quebec, extends beyond Hearst to the west, and extends to the southeast of James Bay on the Quebec side.

Most of this land is held by private owners, who do not use it for farming.

In all, the RCNE estimates that there are 1.2 million hectares of agricultural land which could be exploited for farming and which must be targeted by the business plan.

The idea is to create a professional business plan that will allow all municipalities to make a case for seeking large investments for agriculture in our area.“, explains Gilles Matko, president of the RCNE.

After having been looking for funding over the past few years to fund this project, RCNE now claims to have enough money to hire a consultant to write the business plan.

Of course, we’ll have to hire someone from outside because we don’t have the expertise in the region.“, explains Mr. Matko.

Russia accused of another war crime Russia continues its siege of Ukrainian cities and continued its bombardment of kyiv late into the evening. In Mariupol, where the humanitarian situation is worrying, the city is still asphyxiated, and Ukraine has accused Russian forces of having bombed a school, a new “war crime”, according to the Ukrainian president. The siege of Mariupol has been going on for three weeks. The city is in ruins, and the conditions are very difficult. The Russian army entered the city on Saturday, and an art school there was destroyed by strikes on Sunday, while 400 people – women, children and the elderly – were refugees there. “We know the building was destroyed and peaceful people are still under the rubble. The balance sheet regarding the number of victims is being clarified,” the municipality said on Telegram. To inflict ‘such a thing on a peaceful town […], it is an act of terror which will be remembered even in the next century”, reacted Volodymyr Zelensky, denouncing a new “war crime”. In a statement carried by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the Russian Defense Ministry said Ukraine must surrender by 5 a.m. Monday, and then allow the evacuation of the remaining 130,000 civilians from Mariupol. Russia has indicated that it will open humanitarian corridors for civilians and unarmed soldiers. Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk later countered that surrender was not an option. In the north of the country, the mayor of Chernihiv, Vladislav Atroshenko, for his part denounced an “absolute humanitarian disaster” in his city. “The indiscriminate artillery fire in residential areas continues, dozens of civilians are killed, children and women,” he told television. Negotiations are struggling to get off the ground, although Turkey said on Sunday that the parties were “close to an agreement”.

Logo of a Russian fast food chain looks familiar In response to the closure of McDonald’s restaurants within the country, Russia may replace the American brand with the new chain Uncle Vanya’s, whose logo curiously resembles the popular golden arch. This one is formed by a golden Cyrillic ‘B’, which represents the ‘V’ of ‘Vanya’, on a red background, making the iconic McDonald’s ‘M’ look like it has simply been rotated a quarter. to the right. In the patent application filed on March 12, we can also read the full name in white at the bottom of the logo. On March 8, the American fast food chain McDonald’s announced on its platforms the closure of its 850 branches in Russia in support of Ukraine, 32 years after breaking communist isolationism with a first restaurant. Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin replied a few days later: “Good, but tomorrow it won’t be McDonald’s, but Uncle Vanya’s!” The day after the announcement, the Mediavenir media published a video on Twitter where hundreds of Russian citizens line up to enjoy what will undoubtedly be their last hamburger from the American brand for some time. The news didn’t sit well with everyone, so one citizen, Luka Zatravkin, handcuffed himself to the door of Moscow’s McDonald’s in protest of the closure. He was then reportedly taken to the police station. The new Russian restaurant chain promises 100% local products to support the country’s economy, which has been badly shaken in recent weeks by the economic sanctions imposed internationally against Russia. McDonald’s, for its part, has pledged to continue paying salaries to its 62,000 Russian employees, while the company is already offering its assistance in Poland to welcome refugees. The company also said that in addition to fully paying its Ukrainian employees, it would donate $5 million to its employee relief fund.

For the Kremlin, the conflict in Ukraine “purifies” Russian society of “traitors”
For the Kremlin, the conflict in Ukraine “purifies” Russian society of “traitors” The conflict in Ukraine reveals who the “traitors” are in Russia and a “purification” of the country, the Kremlin estimated Thursday, returning to the very harsh words from President Vladimir Putin the day before. “In such situations, many people turn out to be traitors and leave our lives on their own. Some quit, some leave the country. It is a cleansing. Others break the law and are punished according to the law.” —Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Russian presidency. An undetermined but significant number of Russians have left Russia in the past three weeks due to the tightening imposed by the Russian authorities since the start of the invasion of Ukraine on February 24. “But a lot of people actually want to support our president, and that’s the overwhelming majority,” Peskov noted. In an offensive speech to his government broadcast on television, President Putin on Wednesday strongly defended his military operation in Ukraine and compared the West and its sanctions against Russia to the Nazis during World War II. According to him, the “empire of lies” constituted by Western countries, the media and social networks will want to rely on “a fifth column of national-traitors” to achieve their anti-Russian objectives. “Each people, the Russian people in particular, will always be able to recognize scum and traitors, spit them out as one would spit out a fly from the mouth,” Mr. Putin had said. “I am sure that such real and necessary self-purification of society will only strengthen our country,” he said.

RCNE expects the plan to be completed by the end of the year.

Convince the landowners

While waiting for the plan, the RCNE has launched a series of surveys for owners.

The success of the plan, when launched, rests on the ability to convince those who own this land to sell or lease it in order to develop it.

Selon M. Matko, we already have farmers in the region who are at the forefront of innovation, now it’s time to expand that, over a larger territory».

Roger Lachance, a farmer from the Harty region, believes that these lands are fertile, but little used.

For the vast majority, the land is there and they don’t do anything with it, that’s why it would be important to know if they want to sell it so that there is someone who can use it.“, he says.

He says that many people might want to develop these lands, but it will probably not be new farmers or young people who will develop these lands.

Personally, I think it takes people who are already established, who are already farming, because it’s still big land, so it’s going to take a lot of money, and a young person, or someone who starts in agriculture, where will he get the money?asks Mr. Lachance.

If the project materializes, the two men believe that the region will benefit from it.

The ultimate goal of all of this is to diversify what we can do here in the Northeast and create good jobs and increase the capacity of farmers and those who want to develop their landadds Gilles Matko.
