A rare art of hidden cinema Kerala | Deshabhimani

Kochi > ‘Kitho was amazing in lines. Kalor Dennis––Kitho––JohnPaul. This friendship lasts more than a lifetime. Even though the new generation doesn’t know much, those like Sebastian Paul who were in the group at that time will remember.

1972 period. Before becoming a screenwriter, Kalur Dennis shone as a newspaper editor at the ‘Chitrapournami’ magazine office on MG Road, Ernakulam. Painter Kitho, who painted miracles in the art of cinema, started his office there for the first time. John Paul, who came to this group as a bank officer and became a screenwriter, said goodbye only a few months ago.

Kitho’s friendship with Kalur Dennis, who was a senior at Kalur St. Anthony’s School, began that day. At school, he started drawing for blocks that were used to print pictures on presses. Even after leaving PUC in Maharajas and taking up painting as a way of life, Dennis began by drawing illustrations for his long stories. It was Dennis who first arranged to draw in Chitrakaumudi magazine. Kitho also became famous in the media world after he started drawing illustrations in Chitra Pournami, a popular magazine of Malayalam cinema at that time. The magazine, which was run by Pandalatan AN Ramachandran, was later handed over to Kalur Dennis, a regular writer. Kitho also became the magazine’s first finalist. Sebastian Paul was made Editor-in-Chief. John Paul and photographer Anthony Eastman joined the family.

That Chitrapournami season brought Kitho closer to cinema. In 1978, his acquaintance with IV Sasi brought him to the movie “Ee Manoharatheeram”. Kitho did the art and art direction of the movie. Coincidentally, the job of editing the screenplay of that movie came to the hands of John Paul and Kalur Dennis before the screenwriters.

Kitho has done the for the films of many directors like Jaycee, Joshi, Sathyan Anthikkad, Faasil, Kamal, VG Thambi, Mohan, Harikumar, Thambi Kannanthanam, KS Sethumadhavan, George Kithu, Thulasidas etc. In those days when there were no computer graphics, Kitho brought many innovations in designing. Cartoon posters have been released for the film Aororumariyathe directed by KS Sethumadhavan. The cartoon poster featuring Madhu, Bharat Gopi, Karamana Janardanannayar and Nedumudi Venu pulling a chariot in this six-sheet poster became very popular.
