Next year, 2024, will be the 50th anniversary of the enactment of Law 840 of the province of Neuquén, better known as the “Sports Law”. Our governor-elect was only 4 years old and he knew nothing of the benefits that the sport of the province would obtain with said promulgation. The issue is that this law was never regulated, who knows why, but the reality is that successive governments, that is, the MPN, did nothing to put it into operation.

For about 20 years I have been insisting as a citizen and sports leader, on the urgent need for this law to come into force. During my time at the Neuquén Sports Confederation, we have insisted with legislators and sports secretaries of those times but it was all in vain, the mediocrity of our politicians is stronger than the good sense of a law. Sport in the province has not flourished for years, what’s more, the government ignores it and the few achievements are due to individual efforts, not to sports policies agreed with sports groups, federations and clubs.

Mr. Messineo achieved his third cycling world championship in New York at the age of 80! An example of an athlete who knew how to take advantage of the lessons offered by sport and competition from a young age. An impeccable career with successes in so many countries achieved with his own efforts, due to the bureaucracy and mediocrity of state officials.

Mr. Dovio, an international sports journalist who covers countless sporting events around the world, is ignored. No state recognition. Pride perhaps?

Ignored world skate champions, zero support for Athletics, very low performance in the Araucanía Games.

As a counterpart, drugs and youth violence increase. What are we doing!

The law of sport is the way out. Let’s end with the finger that allocates resources according to their convenience, with officials incapable of appreciating the efforts of clubs and athletes to have a better educated society and better leaders.

I hope in 2024 to be able to celebrate a Happy 50th Anniversary of Law 840, if the governor, at age 54, reflects on its importance and decides to regulate it.
