A satellite to analyze the presence of water on the moon

A camera developed by Oxford University will be sent into space in hopes of finding and analyzing pools of water on the moon.

Named “Lunar Thermal Mapper”, this device aims to determine where the water is on the moon and in what quantity, reports the BBC.

The information collected might allow astronauts who will go to the moon in the next few years to use this water.

Researchers believe it might potentially be purified to drink, use as fuel, or even turn into oxygen.

The satellite will be able to measure the amount of water at different times of the day in order to determine in particular whether its state changes from liquid to gaseous when the surface warms up, for example.

“The data from this mission will help us understand how water travels on the surface and potentially captures traps near the lunar poles,” Oxford University professor Neil Bowes told the BBC.

The launch of the satellite is scheduled for 2024.
