A study explodes a surprise about the discovery of a new way to treat Alzheimer’s disease

Al-Marsad: A recent study revealed that the main factors to stop dementia (Alzheimer’s) might lie in the intestine, not the brain, as experts confirmed that the gut “represents an alternative target that may be easier to influence with drugs or changing the diet,” according to the newspaper (Daily Mail). ) British.

At a conference held in Brighton, Britain, yesterday (Wednesday), under the title “Alzheimer’s Research UK 2022”, a series of experiments linking the gut to the development of Alzheimer’s disease were presented.

One of the trials presented at the conference showed how the “microbiomes” – the community of bacteria in the gut – differ significantly in patients with Alzheimer’s from those without the disorder.

Another trial found that rodents given “faecal” transplants directly from Alzheimer’s patients performed worse on memory tests. A third experiment found that brain stem cells treated with blood from patients with the disorder were less able to build new neurons.

In theory, patients’ gut bacteria influence levels of inflammation in the body which then affects the brain via the blood supply. Inflammation is a major factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

“Most people are surprised that gut bacteria can have any effect on their brain health,” said neuroscientist Dr Idina Silajic from King’s College London, who was involved in analyzing samples from Alzheimer’s patients. But the evidence is growing, and we’re building our understanding of how this happens.

“This leads us to believe that inflammation associated with gut bacteria can affect the brain through the blood,” Dr. Silajic concluded.
