More than a third of Canadians did not visit their dentist in 2022, according to a Statistics Canada report released Monday.

The study also found that roughly the same number of respondents, 35%, did not have dental insurance coverage, while almost a quarter of Canadians surveyed said they avoided dental care due to costs (23.5%).
According to Statistics Canada data, 55% of Canadians were covered by a private dental insurance plan in 2022, which includes a plan offered by an employer, a private plan or a plan offered by a college or university. Also, 4% indicated having a public insurance plan.
Among those with private insurance, 76% visited their dentist in the previous 12 months, compared to 51% of people without private insurance or access to a government-paid dental program. Among people with a public insurance plan, 62% said they had received a dental consultation recently.
In Quebec, almost half (49%) of residents said they did not have dental care insurance. This proportion was higher than that of residents outside Quebec (31%). Nearly 62% of Quebecers say they visited a dentist in 2022, while 20.7% said they did not go because of the high costs of these visits.
Too expensive to pay for yourself
Statistics Canada data shows that approximately half (48%) of families with a net income of less than $70,000 do not have dental insurance.
One in four families with a net income of $90,000 or more, and just over a third of families with an income in the $70,000 to $89,999 range, do not have dental insurance.
In its 2023 budget, the federal government announced the launch of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), which aims to cover dental care for approximately nine million uninsured Canadians with family incomes below 90,000. $.
In total, $13 billion over five years will be allocated to this RCSD, which should be available from the end of 2023.
Note that the Canadian Dental Association recommends regular dental consultations to ensure oral health is maintained, for example a dental exam every six months.
